Maha Rudra Anushthan
महारुद्र अनुष्ठानA large Rudra anushthan with a full plan for readings, abhishek and havan.
Why is this puja performed?
Maha Rudra is a large Shiva anushthan, usually arranged for a major family, temple or community sankalp. It involves many Rudram readings and needs an experienced pandit team. We first work through the number of readings, days, pandits and havan with you, then confirm the full cost.
A commonly followed Maha Rudra count is 1,331 Namakam readings with its Chamakam sequence. The displayed starting estimate must be checked against the actual programme you are booking.
When families arrange it
- An extensive family or institutional Shiva sankalp
- A planned temple or community anushthan
- Collective prayers for peace and well-being
How the puja is performed
The steps below explain what usually happens. Before you book, the pandit will confirm the readings, their number and any differences at your temple.
Planning the anushthan
The main pandit explains the tradition being followed, total readings, number of pandits, days and havan. These details form the basis of your booking.
Opening sankalp and preliminary rites
The family or sponsors sit for the opening sankalp. Ganesh puja and the kalash or mandala preparations follow.
Nyasa and Vedic preparation
The pandits perform the opening nyasa and dhyan required for their Rudram recitation.
Rudram readings
The team completes the Namakam and Chamakam sessions. The main pandit records how many readings have been completed by the team each day.
Abhishek and daily worship
Abhishek, bilva offerings and daily Shiva puja take place alongside the readings. You receive the times at which your family can join.
Homa and purnahuti
The booked havan is performed. You join at the time given for the final offerings and purnahuti.
Finishing the anushthan
The main pandit confirms completion of the readings and havan. Closing prayers and aarti follow, with food or prasad only as separately arranged.
What you and your family do
Your family joins the main sankalp and the sessions agreed with the pandit. You do not have to remain seated through every reading by every pandit.
