Satyanarayan Puja & Katha
सत्यनारायण पूजा एवं कथाSatyanarayan puja, all five chapters of the katha, bhog and aarti.
Why is this puja performed?
Families often arrange Satyanarayan Puja after a marriage, when moving into a home, on Purnima, or after a wish has been fulfilled. You worship Bhagwan Vishnu and listen to the five chapters of the katha with your family.
The katha explains the importance of truthfulness, keeping one’s word and sharing prasad. Set aside time for everyone to hear it, not only the person sitting for the puja.
When families arrange it
- Purnima and family vrat observances
- After a marriage or housewarming
- Thanksgiving or fulfilment of a sankalp
How the puja is performed
The steps below explain what usually happens. Before you book, the pandit will confirm the readings, their number and any differences at your temple.
Puja space and sankalp
The pandit arranges Satyanarayan’s image, the kalash and puja materials. He takes your names and helps you take the sankalp for the puja and katha.
Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana
You begin with Ganesh puja. The pandit establishes the kalash and completes the other opening pujas followed in your family’s tradition.
Satyanarayan pujan
The pandit guides you as you offer water, sandal, flowers, tulsi, incense and a lamp to Satyanarayan Bhagwan.
The five chapters of the katha
The pandit reads all five chapters of the katha. Everyone can listen and join the responses. You can ask him to explain a passage you do not understand.
Naivedya and prepared prasad
The prepared prasad, fruit and other bhog are offered to Bhagwan. Please agree the recipe and quantity with us before the puja.
Aarti and pushpanjali
You join Satyanarayan aarti and offer flowers with the final prayer. The pandit then completes the puja.
Prasad distribution
Prasad is shared with everyone present. If you are keeping a vrat, ask the pandit beforehand when and how to complete it.
What you and your family do
The person offering the puja sits with the pandit. The rest of the family can join the katha and aarti. A havan or meal is booked separately.
